Why we started
Riko Photography Academy was created in 2020 after noticing the same pattern across workshops and portfolio reviews in the Netherlands: many photographers could produce one strong image, but struggled to deliver a consistent set under real constraints. A client brief rarely comes with perfect light, unlimited time, or a forgiving deadline. Yet many courses leaned on abstract “rules” and left participants without a workflow they could repeat on the next shoot.
The academy was built to make the unglamorous part teachable: metering choices that hold up when the weather changes, lighting setups that can be rebuilt quickly, and an editing pipeline that does not drift across a series. We treat each module like a production: plan, shoot, select, edit, export, and deliver—because that is what clients actually pay for.
Being based in Haarlem helps us run sessions that fit real locations and typical Dutch shooting conditions, from overcast daylight to mixed indoor color temperatures. The goal is not a signature style; it is a method you can rely on.
Mission and values
Our mission is to teach photography in a way that matches real work: consistent lighting, controlled color, and deliverables clients can use immediately. We care about craft, but we care just as much about process.
We teach exposure, focus, and light placement as a decision tree you can follow under pressure.
Feedback is tied to observable outcomes: contrast, catchlights, color casts, crop choices, and export settings.
Editing is a workflow: culling criteria, global-to-local corrections, and consistent exports for web and print.
File naming, backups, consent basics, and delivery checklists that reduce revision cycles.
Netherlands-first logistics
Schedules, locations, and assignments are designed for real shoots in the Netherlands. That includes short travel notes, seasonal light considerations, and practical expectations for indoor mixed light common in everyday client work.
Team and teaching roles
Our courses are delivered by a small core team and supported by specialist contributions when a module benefits from deeper industry practice. We keep teaching practical: short explanation, shoot time, then critique that focuses on decisions and outcomes. When guest-led sessions are included, the scope is always defined in the course outline so participants know exactly what the specialist covers.
Lead Instructor (lighting and on-set workflow)
Focuses on metering, modifier choice, and building a repeatable setup order for studio and location work. Known for turning confusing lighting setups into a simple checklist you can rebuild quickly. Teaching emphasizes light direction, subject-to-background distance, and controlling specular highlights.
Role-based profile. Teaching experience: 6+ years. Specialty: studio and location lighting.
Portrait Direction Instructor (posing and communication)
Teaches posing cues, micro-adjustments, and a calm pace that keeps subjects comfortable on set. Sessions cover headshot structure, consistent framing, and how to guide expressions without over-directing. Critique focuses on posture, facial angles, and light placement that flatters without drifting into gimmicks.
Role-based profile. Teaching experience: 5+ years. Specialty: headshots and lifestyle portrait sessions.
Post-Production Specialist (editing and delivery)
Builds editing workflows that stay consistent across a series: culling criteria, global adjustments, selective corrections, and export presets. Known for methodical color correction and for practical delivery standards: file naming, color space choices, and avoiding repeated “one more tweak” cycles.
Role-based profile. Editing experience: 7+ years. Specialty: Lightroom/RAW workflow and client-ready exports.
